A swimming sensation at Holiday Gym & Spa

A swimming sensation at Holiday Gym & Spa
Published : 2008-11-27

NOTHER top caliber instructor joins the prestigious roster of Holiday Gym and Spa, Davao City’s premier health and wellness destination.
Haroon Cali, a 21-year-old student at the University of Mindanao taking up B.S. Education, is now a part-time aerobics instructor at the Holiday Gym and Spa. Cali teaches belly dancing, Cardio Latino, Hi-lo, kickboxing, aqua aerobics and has classes three to five times a week.

Being a varsity scholar at the UM, Cali started out as a client back in 2007 when his school used the facilities to practice swimming.
Cali’s medals are numerous. He recently bagged five medals at the University Games in Dumaguete last October: one gold for 400 meter individual medly, one silver for 200 meter butterfly, two bronze for 200 individual medley and 400 meter freestyle.
He is not new to the sport, as he has been doing it since he was growing up in Iligan City, his hometown and where his family still lives.
He started swimming lessons at the age of six years old and a year later he joined inter-club meets. When he reached Grade Two, he joined the first Palarong Pambansa. He did not get any medals then but the love for the sport has caught on.
Since then he has been joining regional and local competitions and even the BIMP-Eaga Friendship Games in 2003 and 2005. In 2003, he joined the Palarong Pambansa again and this time bagged five gold medals and two silver.
This week he is set to leave for Brunei for the BIMP-Eaga Friendship Games representing Davao City, a city he has come to love.
“Maraming nakakalaban na magaling sa international competitions. Kabado ka parati. Di mo kilala sino ang bago. Unlike local competitions, kilala mo na kadalasan ang ibang competitors,” he said in an interview.
In the 2005 BIMP-Eaga games, Cali bagged one gold medal in relay, two silvers in the individual 200 meter butterfly and four bronze medals in the individual medley.
He trains by himself and has no swimming coach.
He said he swims two hours a day and cross-train at the HGS gym for toning. With a strict self-discipiline, he relies only on himself to prepare for each competition.
Cali said he is on a high fiber diet of fruits and vegetables. And this is the first year he is going to join a competition using the cross-training technique.
Swimming is safe compared to other contact sports. It is also advantageous to know how to swim. This is the best exercise, lahat ng muscles mo gumagalaw. I had asthma when I was in elementary but was cured with swimming,” he said. “Wala din akong bisyo, no smoking. I drink occasionally pero kung kaya na hindi uminom sa parties, hindi ako umiinom.”
He said his parents, especially his mom is proud of his achievements.
“I am also earning by being a part-time teacher here and no tuition fee because I am scholar. Hindi na ako hingi ng hingi ng pera. Mahirap din sa time management pero flexible ang schedule kaya madali. Disiplina lang talaga,” he said.
Cali is also proud to be part of the HGS family.
“I am lucky to be with HGS. I exercise and at the same time loose weight while teaching aerobics. Hindi ako pressure sa trabaho. Parang kapamilya. Comfortable mag-stay dito. Ang clients naman close ko na parang barkada na lang,” he said.
He says teaching aerobics is in line with my course since he majors in Physical Education and he loves to choreograph.
Cali has fallen in love with Davao City .
“I love Davao since lower cost of living dito. Maganda and maraming opportunities. I plan to stay here for good,” he said of his three years living here. He also plans to concentrate on studies and work
Cali admonishes everyone to work out and go to the gym.
“Dapat mag-gym kasi importante ito sa katawan. It is vital to one’s physical and mental well being,” he said.
Have fun while staying fit. Visit Holiday Gym and Spa now, located along Torres Street, Davao City with telephone number 222-3041 or visit their website: www.holidaygymandspa.com.

SWIMMING ACE "HAROON CALI" Certified Dolphins!

Swimming Ace Haroon Cali
By Marianne L. Saberon-Abalayan

HAROON Cali, born in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to a civil engineer father Lominog Cali and midwife mother Bridget Dieto Caballero on May 16, 1987, was left to the care of his aunt in Iligan City a month after.

He realized that he wouldn't have gone to where he is now in the sport of swimming if not for Aunt Florita Cabalhin.

Arroyo Watch: Sun.Star blog on President Arroyo

"She is my inspiration. I started swimming when I was five. It was my cousin who encouraged and taught me to swim. My aunt, who is the older sister of my mom, enrolled me to a swimming lesson when I turned six so I can engage into competition," he reminisced.

He said Aunt Flori accompanied him wherever he competed. It may be in the Batang Pinoy Games, Mindanao Friendship Games, Palarong Pambansa or in any other local or regional meet.

But Ronz's aunt died of stroke in 1997. It was also the year that he missed action in the Palaro.

"I didn't compete in the Palaro that year because there was no one who could be with me. My aunt had been very supportive since I learned the sport. She took good care of me and encouraged me to practice more and achieve my goals. I loved her so much and her husband, too. They're my parents here while my real parents worked abroad," he told this writer.

He said it was only in 1997 that his parents, who worked in Saudi for about 15 years, came home and decided to settle in the country for good.

All grown-up

I remembered seeing Ronz for the first time in one of the Mayor's Cup Age-Group Swimming competitions held at the Ladislawa Country Club in Buhangin.

I also saw him during the first MFG in Tubod, Lanao del Norte in 2001 where he won a bronze medal for Iligan. He also recalled seeing me at the revival of the Bimp-Eaga Games in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan in 2003.

But I was surprised to see him all grown-up and more confident in Iloilo City during the National Prisaa Finals last year.

He even grew taller than me. Argh! When before we just see eye-to-eye, now I really have to look up when I talk to this five-foot-seven young man.

Time may have changed Ronz' many features and outlook in life, but he remained friendly, accommodating and you can say that again, bubbly! He never runs out of things to say.

The eldest in a brood of three, Ronz will soon march the aisle with a degree in Bachelor in Secondary Education-Mapeh at the University of Mindanao.

"I took BSED major in Music, Arts, Physical Education and Health because I know that my abilities and capabilities are more on bodily-kinesthetic which means I'm more inclined to physical activities. I love to swim, dance, choreograph and teach other people. I get to share my skills and at the same time earn money. I think this is the only course that can help me achieve my goals and ambitions in life," he said.

He will soon graduate but not without an honor or legacy to leave his alma mater and Davao City, which he considers his second home.

Reaping honors

Ronz first competed in a local event in the "City of Majestic Waterfalls", - Iligan - in 1996 where he won a silver medal.

He then competed in a regional meet in Cotabato City where he brought home two silvers and one bronze. But he failed to win any medal in the Palaro held the same year.

"It was only in the 2003 Palarong Pamabansa in Lanao that I finally won a gold medal. I bagged five golds and two silvers. I felt very happy because I achieved one of my ambitions in life," he said.

He got into the UM swimming varsity team through the help of Coach Denis Beciera.

He continued, "I was offered a class A scholarship so I accepted. I joined the team because I wanted to experience the life of being away from my parents and they also supported me."

The Ian Thorpe fan shared that with his scholarship, he enjoyed 100 percent free tuition, sports uniform, good training and dormitory.

Among his other exploits were the 2002 Milo Little Olympics Most Outstanding Athlete award in Cagayan de Oro and 2003 Palaro most outstanding athlete award in Lanao.

He captured gold medals in the 4th Bimp-Eaga Games in Malaysia, 2006 National Prisaa in Dagupan and 2007 National Prisaa in Iloilo.

His one gold and two silver finishes in the 2008 National Prisaa in Zamboanga City and one gold in the National University Games in Bacolod earned him the So Kim Cheng Sports Foundation Most Oustanding Male Swimmer Award.

He received the award at the Grand Regal Hotel on July 22.

Ronz said he could never imagine not being in sports.

"This is where I made a name for myself. I toured different places for free. I also earned money and got to college without paying any amount. I gained a lot of friends and I've helped my parents. Sports gives me a healthy lifestyle," he added.

His greatest dream is to compete in the Olympics - a dream of every athlete.

Five years from now, Ronz sees himself as a good model PE teacher, aerobics instructor and swimming coach

DOLPHINs..

Dolphins... marine mammals that are closely related to whales and porpoises. Dolphins is the most friendly creature in the world that is why we named our group after it. Actually i find it so nonsense having a group name but eventually i was used to it.. it's more easier to spread something like odds.. :) It is really hard for us to pick a group name, we nimbled and used our creativity for us to came out with a obdurate name and BOOM! Dolphins came out, complicated right? oh yeah..we are very imaginable and creative.. i know.. (don't mention it again) we are sterile.. STOP! Why in hell we choose dolphins? ... dolphins live in water, they love to swim, dance, sing as well, they always smile?,they breathe and they are lovely so well to us.. These group is very POPular.. nah, fool! i mean POOL.. like swimming pool? :)
2007.. I met them in the gym(oh,i love it).. They were as good as an angel.. :P a very approachable group with a kind-hearted hands? love? whatever you call it.. I went out with them and began to join them in an endless water sport SWIMMING.. i know,im not good at it but im kinda loving it since i was a kid so i still can relate to them(a little bit).. :) swimming is there life,YES.. IT is.. I can't imagined myself swimming with them everynight 24/7,not a swimmer though.. oh well papel, believe it or not.. see and hear.. THEY're really like dolphins.. do you get it? WOW! how on earth did GOD bring these people in one group? How did He figure it out? DESTINY... i think.. "if it's meant to be,it's meant to be".. right people?
WHATEVER we think,WHEREVER we are.. swimming is on top of our mind.. it's like B1 and B2? always together,if you get one the other will remain in a chair.. i'm talking about swimming here, not the group.. okay? hmm.. I even tried swimming in a deep black sea with them.. Things that you will not see me dying with happened with their unstoppable encouragement.. See how great things strike on a person? Oh well water is the one that keep us alive and kicking... "not to mention the another".. wherever it will take us,im still glad of having you as a part of my life... how you guys played a very special love in my heart.. haha
here are some pictures of the dolphins:
we are what we are...
we live like a fairytale..
happily ever after!

TRIP na TRIP (binkielicious)

Cagayan De Oro City is located at the Northern coast of Mindanao,Philippines. It is the capital of Misamis Oriental province and the regional center of Northern Mindanao. The city is also known for the initials c.d.o. It is also known as the "City of Golden Friendship". People here are called "Kagayanons".

so Let's explore Cagayan...

The pryce Gas or Pryce Plaza! Pryce Plaza is a haven of charm within the rousing and blossoming city of Cagayan de Oro. Overlooking Macajalar Bay, Pryce Plaza is majestically enthroned atop Carmen Hill unfolding a breathtaking panorama of the city and the dramatic mountain ranges beyond. Just a 15-minute drive from the Lumbia Airport and only 10 minutes away from the city proper, Pryce Plaza is the most luxurious convention hotel in Mindanao.
You can view the City from Pryce Plaza and it's very relaxing!
i love it because it has a pool..

Let's go to divisoria.. i don't get the logic why they called it divisoria?! Maybe because every weekends they have a tiangge where you can buy good things at a very low price right? oh well whatever... Night Cafe is a place where you can sit and talk with your friends without spending a thousands. And experience their tiangge culture every week ends. Live bands, flea market, and all fresco restaurant are in! Your hard-earned peso goes a long way here.

When it comes to shopping malls,LIMKETKAI is with the Kagayanons because of it's area and the shop itself. A very big mall but very crowded so you won't really enjoy walking and exploring the place. So let me introduce another mall in CDO!
Are you into shopping? then SM City CDO is the best place for you.. Compared to ketkai, you can count the people inside the mall. Maybe because it is 10 minutes away from downtown. You can enjoy shopping here for sure but i noticed that it has a number of food chain(res to) only but still, you can call it a mall though.

An over-view of Cagayan de Oro. i don't have info's about the place because we went here night time. I think it's a restaurant before but been closed by the city's mayor because his house is next to it. It's called highridge or heaven it think?! All i can remember is the "nakakatakot na daan" and "alikabok" so better go here with wheels! haha

So better go to FOOD..DRINKS...Co...

When it comes to food,CDO is also the best place.. There's this fancy restaurant that we dine-in.. The Sentro 1850... An international Cuisine! The res to is always jam-packed and the food is serve well.. i really love it here! you can feel the essence of the City.. From kosher to Pasta to asian desserts, Sentro can provide the necessary elements that makes everyone .
But if you are craving for a chicken,
SUNBURST fits in your appetite.. Located besides LIMKETKAI.. The best Chicken in town! Sunburst have a branch in DC.. nothing much. We ate here the first time i visited Cagayan. Check it for yourself!
Yey!

The most enjoying part when you visit Cagayan De Oro.. The gimikS,Night Out,partiEs,BarS,cLub and the Kagayanon's party people!
shoot! time for party.. we went to the bars that we checked the night before this night out and suddenly got disappointed because we were expecting the place to have a lotsa people like the bars here in Davao considering that it was past 12 already.. But after an hour of waiting, the bars was filled with bunch of party people! yeah!
THE FIRST STOP!
i don't exactly know what's the meaning of FU.. They say you'll only know if you visit their club.. well,we went here but still.. My head is . A bar For Us? Well,whatever... it's not about the name,it's all about the place! A very nice and relaxing bar where you can dance(house music),drink, party and etc. It is beside the casual brew and O.I.C(above).
here's some pictures of FU CLUB: (credits from FU multiply)

See? Look like a BIG bar...
FU club.....in CDO!
TSADA! :)

-you can jam with the elite people in cdo here-

Another Bar that i enjoyed a lot was the E50 or Eleven50... I was amazed because you can choose your type of music. It's a two storey building! If your into house music(or togsh2x for them) chill out with the party people at the first floor and if you want to be a R&B princess, well you can stay above the togsh2x floor without paying
entrance fee again.. And take note, the E fee is consumable! and ! Tsada!

I'm just bored!
Inside E50(togsh2x)

The Cagayan de Oro River -- mighty and beautiful. Experience its full glory. Experience whitewater rafting at its best with the newest outfitters in the Cagayan de Oro River.
Safety is of paramount concern. Their equipments are all imported and brand new. The guest are provided with complete gears such as helmets, flotation devices, rescue ropes, first-aid kit and dry bags. Go check it and enjoy! And don't forget to take !

i love being here... the place is beautiful and the people is cool! headS uP!
The experienced i had here was memorable! But hell me? (i didn't have pictures myself) why? because i didn't bring a camera considering i have my phone with me and i wasn't really expecting that we'll explore CDO that much and thinking na tatlo lang kami(with mommie bip and jopel, nakakahiya if i let them take pictures of me because they are not into it) right? ohhh, yeah! i have pictures pala pero nasa phone nila, all i have here is their faces.. i'll post it when i get mine too!
i forgot to tell you also that the people here or the kagayanon's are fun of saying "TSADA" and the well-known word "LUGAR" which for us,a place! LOL!
i hope to come here again and bring a camera and bunch of FRIENDS!

TRUE friendship is here

Friendship isn't always easily described.Friends are special people.

Friends are the one who you can turn your back with and when you face them again, they will still be there. A friend should be real. Those people who think they are your friend in different way is not your friend. Looser so what you called. In friendship, there would be a lot of struggles, and you should pass on it together no matter what. It's normal to fight with your friends because we are totally living differently but you should always try to keep the friendship you've started and make way for both of you to get over it. It's good also if you tell your friends of her/his imperfections, thats a TRUE friend is. If you have friends, make sure to hold with them forever because you'll never know how things change, we are in a unique world..we can't predict what's gonna happen unless you have a supernatural power like charmed ones. Never get jealous, don't be envious, love and trust each other. simple right? But honestly speaking,in reality you will never know who are the good and bad ones. It's in your hand who you will choose. Never think, use your heart and mind. Our friends, in a very real sense, reflect the choices we make in life. Good times? Laugh? Relax? that's a part of friendship. But you gotta be open for Problems! Fight! Argument! because you can never turn away from it. Don't think that friendship is for fun, habit or proclivity. I hate the-so-called friend when they only remember you if he/she is in trouble, that's a CRAP! You shouldn't be calling them friends coz' infact they are LOOSERs. As the quote says "always be there for your friend,no matter what". Do you know the meaning of no matter what? i bet not.. But we are still acting and thinking as your GOOD friend so we understand, quote and quote "JUST". Do you still remember where you came from? Do you think of the friendship we have or maybe HAD? Are you not scared of loosing FRIENDs? Are you sure you will trade friendship over LOVE? i mean you can have it at the same time if you know how to handle it..Well, your will be done! Whatever you think it's good for you.. We are still being a friend right? Goodluck and Be it!

"A true friendship that lasts throughout the years is rare indeed, and to be treasured as a priceless gift." -sammy lane sharp

"Friends No Matter What " by Zefy_me

Friends... who are they? If you've got friends make sure that they are the real ones... The Dolphins for example... I've been with them since i met them.. keeping it real and I am being franc to everyone... In friendship there should always be the communication no matter how FAR and BUSY you are because we now that in the end... WE WILL MISS THEM and look for their company.. That's why to my fellow Dolphins, all I want to happen is that we should keep in touch from time to time and NEVER FORGET the times that we had shared... Hoping that you'll give time and make us understand one another why things changed... Don't let us think.. Speak up.. You know we are here... Just don't be such a fake!!! I HATE FAKES!!! Dolphins, i'll just take our relationship as an example because I know that there are some people among us who's keeping themselves away from us and without giving us reasons to be understood... Oh well, I know I know people change but for crying out loud... Don't forget us okay!!!! HAHAHAHAHHA!!! Sounds familiar who??? Well just remember those people and let them realize what they miss.... ADIOS AMIGOS!!!!

Soon, they are swept up in a passionate, thrilling and unorthodox romance. To Edward, Bella is what he has waited 90 years for - a soul mate. But the closer they get, the more Edward must struggle to resist the primal pull of her scent, which could send him into an uncontrollable frenzy. Flirting whew!!!!

Flirting was described as being "casual conversation with a romantic spark," and the consensus seemed to be that it is a learnable skill.

Some tips which various people offered were:

· Ask specific, open-ended questions of the person you're flirting with; these demonstrate that you're interested specifically in THEM as a person, and also provide an opportunity for the discussion to take a romantic turn.

· Look for humor in what the person you're flirting with is saying, and let yourself laugh at his or her jokes if you find them funny.

· Try to look your best, and use good posture and eye contact.

· Don't follow people around or act needy.

· Don't be insincere.

The topic of rejection came up. The key thing to understand about rejection seemed to be that "everybody gets rejected once in a while." One idea was that if you never risk rejection it's likely your social life will end up being very dull. It was also mentioned that the range of tastes in body type and personality type is enormous; something that you think is a liability is for some people almost certainly a turn-on.

The question came up of how to tell if someone is interested in you. The following were mentioned as clues, especially when observed together:

· If he or she is acting more flirtatious toward you than toward other people at the same event.

· If his or her friends are paying attention to you when he or she isn't around (often a clue that this person talked to his or her friends about you).

· If he or she is smiling while listening to you, and seems to be listening especially "actively."

There's a lot of crossover between good listening skills and good flirting skills, but there are also clear differences. For example, if you're in a job interview you're obviously going to be listening "actively," but nobody is going to confuse this with flirting. It's the "romantic spark" aspect of flirting that distinguishes it from standard "good listening."

One attendee shared some interesting ideas on the importance of "validating what the other person wants to be." This means looking for specific ways in which how someone thinks of themself as unique and valuable is consistent with their actual behavior and history.

Body language was brought up several times. Aligning your body towards the person you are interacting with, leaning slightly forwards (which usually happens naturally when someone is interested in what another has to say), using open posture, etc. were all mentioned. When people who like each other are listening especially intently to each other "mirroring" tends to naturally occur; body language, gestures, and breathing tend to synchronize between the two people. It is difficult to do these things consciously without them seeming forced; the discussion along these lines was therefore mainly descriptive.

Eye contact was also mentioned several times. Looking into someone's eyes just a little longer than would ordinarily be considered customary or comfortable seems to be a common element of the flirting process.

Asking questions that are "almost too personal" was also brought up. The idea is that humans progress to greater levels of intimacy by sharing vulnerabilities, and that if someone is interested in you they are unlikely to turn down the chance to make the conversation more personal (unless you REALLY push the envelope, obviously...)

The importance of giving sincere complements was mentioned more than once. Going along with the idea of flirting being a learnable skill, it was mentioned that a good way to practice flirting is to do it a little bit every day, perhaps with friends or perhaps with postal workers :)

Social networks usually expand by cultivating friendships which are serious enough for your new friends to introduce you to their friends. For this reason, activities that allow prolonged contact with other people are valuable. Political action groups or volunteer groups or special interest/hobby groups are especially worthwhile because you get a chance to meet folks in a more prolonged and sincere context, because you already have a shared interest, and because if nothing good flirting-wise comes out of it at least you either learned more about your hobby or did some good for your community.

DOLPHINS!!!

DOLPHINS are ...

Friends are a pretty important part of most people's lives!
•Someone who will support you no matter what.
•Someone you can trust and who won't judge you.
•Someone who won't put you down or deliberately hurt your feelings, but will show kindness and respect.
•Someone who will love you not because they feel they have to because you're their friend, but because they choose to.
•Someone whose company you enjoy and whose loyalty you can depend upon.
•Someone who will be there no matter what your situation is.
•Someone who is trustworthy and not afraid to tell you the truth, no matter how hard it is sometimes.
•Someone who can laugh when you laugh.
•Someone who will stick around when things get rough.
•Someone who makes you smile.
•Someone who can accept you for who you are, and just lend you an ear when you need to whine or complain.
•Someone who will cry when you cry.
•Someone who will give you room to change.
You might see them every day, once a year, or less. You might hardly see them at all but instead keep in touch via telephone, email, or online.
Friends might come and go in your life, they might make you laugh and cry, but most importantly of all they love you for who you are. It doesn't matter what a person looks like or what kind of clothes they wear, but it's what's on the inside that counts. It's the actions they take, no matter how big or small, to show you how much of a good friend they are, and being there for you no matter what, even when things are incredibly important!
We are much like sister or brother.. we have one perception in life and that is to have a successful life someday and let the friendship grow much stronger.. To live with passion and fulfill our dreams.. We hope to have a longer years of bond, friendship without end and love forever..
